EXHIBITION: Jared Deery & Colleen Cunningham

DATES: Reception: May 14, 7-10pm (gallery hours by appointment)

359 Gallery is proud to announce two concurrent solo exhibitions by Brooklyn based artists Jared Deery and Colleen Cunningham.

"The Lost Forest" is a compilation of drawings, paintings and sculptures that encompass a three year period in the life of artist Jared Deery. Using a variety of materials, he creates pieces
to which the process is imperative.

Deery constructs a language specific to personal memories, nature and his childhood. Creating and re-creating his own history using organic forms and imagery, Deery drafts a blueprint of misplaced experiences. In his narrative, memories become isolated images that are inter-woven by context. The result is many insular pieces forming a section from the topography of his memory. Deery cites Early Feminist Art, Surrealism, Folk Art and the Northern Renaissance Movement among his influences. He is also inspired by stock photography, vintage prints and photographs from his own travel, which he collects and then translates into the language of his work.

Colleen Cunningham uses her own photographs in combination with found images from magazines, vintage catalogs and resource books to create stark and often uncomfortable images
that challenge the conventions of both photography and collage. Head to Toe is a collection of hand made collages comprised of human forms. Each figure is assembled using the human body as a template.

Cunningham considers each image a portrait, containing both inherent and constructed sexuality. Blurring the lines of age, gender and race, the figures challenge our concepts of the body. Contrasting between stoic vignettes and bright, technicolor fantasies, her images create a parody of modern stereotypes. Using personal photographs from her past, Cunningham infuses a connection between herself and the characters she creates. Her work stems from a personal sense of irony regarding the concept of beauty in media created images.
